Audio Technica AT895 Adaptive Array Shotgun Microphone
Besides their new ENG wireless mic system, Audio Technica's booth drew lots of NAB attention with their radical new design for a special application shotgun microphone system. The AT895 is the modern answer to parabolic miking, but offers greater reach, better frequency response, and more portability. It can deliver over 80 dB side rejection! The mic employs an adaptive array of elements to create the tightest acoustic pattern possible (pattern is adjustable). But where the acoustic elements leave off, smart DSP's take over. The mic learns its environment, and adapts itself to favor the on-axis target and filter out the off-axis background. The results are amazing. On the crowded NAB floor, you could hear Fred whisper from the mic suspended on a Fisher boom nearly four feet overhead! Applications of the new mic will include sporting events (replacing the awkward parabolic dishes); wildlife monitoring; law enforcement/surveillance; and usage on overhead booms on exterior theatrical shoots where background noise is an extreme problem (beaches, busy streets, industrial plants, near motorized vehicles). The mic is somewhat thicker and heavier than a conventional shotgun, but is easily hand-holdable. The mic will be offered in turn-key packages: a studio rig and a location rig. The location rig (which makes the most sense to us) will sell for approx $2695 and will include carrying case, special belt worn control box/power supply, special 7-pin cable to connect the mic head to the processing unit, shockmount, and Rycote windscreen. Endorsed and recommended by the National Association of Forensic Video. |
