New AX1 plug-on transmitter for UM1 and UM32 wireless, $225.
The UM32 features 32 user selectable UHF frequencies, all in
a package no bigger than the UM1.
One definite advantage is that you can instantly change
channels to avoid local RF interference encountered at your location.
Another benefit is the ability to tune more than one receiver
to the same transmitter, for feeding multiple camcorders. By the way, the UM32
frequency stack includes all of the UM1 channels.
Price of the UM32 starts at only $550 for a complete system
including lav mic.
Samson also came out with a plug-on transmitter ("butt
plug") that will work with UM1 and UM32 systems.
The AX1 is officially part of the new Samson Airline consumer
wireless family. Paired with an inexpensive, wall mountable (AC) receiver -- it
is intended for small room applications.
But we tested the AX1 with the high quality, portable, UM1
& UM32 receivers and discovered that the frequencies are compatible. When
paired with these diversity receivers, the AX1 was capable of very increased
range! Price of the AX1(w/o rec'vr) is only $225.
The AX1 plug-on transmitter ("butt plug") connects to the bottom of
any XLR handheld microphone, thus permitting wireless operation.
The AX1 could also be used with (self powered) shotgun mics or boompoles.
Although the AX1 is officially intended to mate with Samson's new Airline
series of lightweight and lower performance (than their UM UHF diversity
series), we discovered that Samson employs the same UHF frequencies.
The AX1 uses the same channels as the UM1 portable wireless, in the 800mHz
range. The AX1 is a single channel system (as is the UM1 series), so you must
order them on the same channel (1-4) as your existing UM1. But the 32 channel
selectable UM32 encompasses all of the four available UM1 frequencies, so there
is no problem.
Samson also offers a miniature, pin-on bodypak that has
interesting potential for concealing under clothing. The bodypack is single
frequency, but works with UM32 or UM1 receivers.
A built-in mic allows the unit to be quickly adhered to the
chest area, or just dropped into a pocket. An external lav can be plugged into
the aux micro mini jack.
