Improving ATWu101
Back Up Next We are authorities in production sound recording for video and filmmaking. We also have lots of accessories for videography; and are dealers for Casablanca, AVIO, and Renommee non-linear video editors; as well as turnkey AVID & AVID Liquid (aka Pinnacle) editing solutions.  If you would like a copy of our 2005/2006 "cowboy cover" catalog (free, of course), please phone or e-mail us. We are working on a new 2007 catalog, coming later this year.

Note that we have lowered many prices in order to compete with "New York" discounters. Always call us to check on the latest pricing, and remember to refresh your browser, since we have heard reports of folks looking at olde pages from ancient searches rather than the current ones.

Improving the performance of the Audio-Technica ATW-U101 wireless system

Equipment Emporium Inc has found two ways of greatly improving the overall range (working distance) of the ATW-U100 series ENG receivers.

To begin with, operate the receivers from a 12v DC source whenever possible. The stronger voltage appears to make the receivers more powerful and increases their range.

There are 3 simple ways to achieve this.

When regular 117v AC is available, you can use an inexpensive AC to DC power supply ($15.00).

If AC is not convenient, then use a CIG plug power adapter in conjunction with any 12v video battery pack or belt.

Finally, if you are mounting the receivers onto the back of a full-size, professional camcorder, then you can take advantage of  the (Sony 4pin) 12vDC output socket by using an appropriate power adapter cable, such as the ones made for LectroSonics.

The other technique for increasing the range of the ATW-U100 series wireless is to use a directional antenna.

These antennas were originally manufactured for use with UHF high-definition television monitors and are tuned for the same UHF frequencies as the Audio Technica wireless. They provide a higher gain, directional pickup for the diversity receiver.

Our own field tests have found that the best performance occurs when the directional antenna is used in conjunction with one of the original omnidirectional antennas that come with the wireless.

The antennas come packaged with an RF cable, BNC antenna mounting adapter, handle, and base stand (not shown).

Price is only $39.95.
