EQE: Beyond the Catalog
Published: 08/18/09
Our mission is to gather and present useful information, tips, tricks, reviews, and tutorials. We'll even help you network.
The Equipment Emporium no longer sells equipment. We have evolved "beyond the sales catalog." We are educators and purveyors of knowledge.
This website is intended as an educational resource for those interested in video and film production. Our specialty is Production Sound Recording (location sound), although we are also versed in other aspects of production, from pre to post. One does not live in a vacuum.
Think of this website as an extension of the classroom. It is the virtual showroom of our dreams, except that there are no cash registers, no shopping carts, no pushy sales people. Just some highly experienced "old timers" who have been there and done that. Experts who love to share their mastery of the production crafts with all who are curious and motivated to learn.
The phrase, "beyond the catalog" has another meaning as well. The information and advice that you will find here is a far cry from what you might encounter in a typical sales catalog or online store. Our goal is not to generate income by selling you equipment. You should never be swayed into buying something based on rumor or misleading descriptions. Instead, we want to present you with as much information as we can to help you in making your purchase decisions (from the vendor of your choice).
Our articles and tutorials will help you use your equipment -- be it newly acquired or part of your package for a long time. The forums let you ask specific questions, and contribute your own wealth of acquired knowledge with others. We have areas for students; and even offer teaching guides for faculty.
In the old days when we were still involved in sales, folks came to us because they trusted us. We have always treated everyone as a friend, and only sold products that we believed in. People appreciated our honesty coupled with all of our years of experience in production. We didn't tout advertising propaganda nor rhetoric; we spoke from having used the equipment and having spent most of a lifetime working in the field.
We plan on continuing that trust. However, we must ask for something in return. Please subscribe.
Since we no longer generate revenue from sales and rentals, the donations that come in from subscriptions are what covers the expense of maintaining this resource. In addition to the cost of the site itself, there is a lot of time and effort involved in research, field testing, and evaluating products.
The information that you glean from this site can save you big bucks in terms of equipment expenditures and improved production technique. The cost of an annual subscription is less than one textbook, less than one business lunch, even less than the cost of one microphone cable.
Our industry is constantly evolving. Nowdays, what's in your head is just as important as what's on your soundcart.
