Audio Technica is offering a new, camera mountable, UHF diversity wireless mic system that features automatic frequency scanning and a dual-channel receiver (like having two receivers in one housing).

ATW-U100 Series Professional UHF

Note: Audio Technica recently discontinued the u100 series wireless after introducing their new 1800 series (see above). We still have some components still available, although there are no more bodypack systems.

Audio Technica's portable UHF diversity system designed for broadcasters and professional production.

In addition to saving the cost of 9volt alkaline batteries, we have discovered that operating the receiver from external 12vDC appears to extend the working range of the U101 systems. External powering can be had from AC adapters, CIG plug adapter cables, and specialized Sony-style 4-pin power outlets found on broadcast camcorders.

UHF directional antenna     $39.95
These antennas were originally manufactured for use with UHF high-definition television monitors and are tuned for the same UHF frequencies as the Audio Technica wireless. They provide a higher gain, directional pickup for the diversity receiver.
Our own field tests have found that the best performance occurs when the directional antenna is used in conjunction with one of the original omnidirectional antennas that come with the wireless.
During our "walk test", Fred actually was more than 350 yards away from the office, and only stopped walking because he could no longer even see Equipment Emporium from way down the street! The signal had not deteriorated yet.
It should be noted that the receiver was being powered by external 12vDC from a battery pack, which also helps extend the range.

When using the Pro88, make sure to securely tape where the mic plugs in to the bodypack. Any movement of the connector may create noise. Batteries last up to 6 hours continuous usage, but Fred & Tom like to change them after 4 hours.

If you need stronger audio output, try plugging the output cable into the Phones Output (rather than Mic Output) and set the input of your recorder to LINE LEVEL INPUT.
