Good, all-purpose hypercardioid pattern, mainly for general interiors and the
occasional exterior. Switchable low cut filter. Flat off-axis response makes it
easier to balance between uneven dialogue levels; just angle slightly away from
the louder voice, which will reduce its volume relative to the other voice
without causing background to pump up and down. Suggested interior reach is from
1 to 5 feet overhead of actors.

Cardioid (interior) Shotgun

 Capsule style condenser cardioid.
Great for tight interiors where echo is a problem. Less overhead reach than
short shotguns, approx 2 feet, but really cuts out the echo. Good for medium
2-shots. Low handling noise. Built-in low cut filter. Requires 48v Phantom. If
you don't have this mic in your kit, one day you will wish that you had! Can be
ordered as AT4053 (tighter pattern), or just add the tighter capsule as an
accessory. Compares very well to the Schoeps. Foam windscreen included.

Lower cost condenser cardioid mic close in quality to the AT4051. Permanent

 Audio Technica's new inexpensive
short shotgun. Ideal for ENG, documentary, or corporate. Very rugged. Short
shotgun pattern works well for interior as well as exterior. Built-in low cut
filter. Uses AA battery or Phantom power. Includes foam windscreen.
An excellent choice for videographers and low budget filmmakers. It is a step
above the venerable AT835b short shotgun that has served us well for over a
decade.
The new AT897 is only 11 inches long. Shorter in length than the AT835b or the
Senn K6/ME66, and easier to keep out of the frame if you are using the mic
on-board a camcorder! But the real difference is in the performance! The AT897
sounds much closer to a condenser mic than it does to another ENG (electret
condenser) mic. The dialogue is richer and less shrill. Echo is reduced
somewhat. The AT897 has more front reach, and better side rejection than either
of the other two.
