UHF TV Freqs
Back Up Next We are authorities in production sound recording for video and filmmaking. We also have lots of accessories for videography; and are dealers for Casablanca, AVIO, and Renommee non-linear video editors; as well as turnkey AVID & AVID Liquid (aka Pinnacle) editing solutions.  If you would like a copy of our 2005/2006 "cowboy cover" catalog (free, of course), please phone or e-mail us. We are working on a new 2007 catalog, coming later this year.

Note that we have lowered many prices in order to compete with "New York" discounters. Always call us to check on the latest pricing, and remember to refresh your browser, since we have heard reports of folks looking at olde pages from ancient searches rather than the current ones.

UHF TV Frequency Conflicts

Most of you are aware that the big commotion at NAB was the official announcement that broadcast television is going high definition.

What you may not be aware of is that local TV stations will be allocated UHF channels up to channel 68 or 69 to do this.

Currently, the lower frequency UHF wireless mics transmit in frequency ranges that will be taken over by TV. These radio mics will be rendered obsolete or will have to be upgraded somehow to operate in higher frequencies (not always possible).

In addition, many police, fire, and public safety departments are currently operating in UHF frequencies that will be affected. They will also have to be re-assigned new frequencies, and they will have priority over film/video industries. That could mean our losing channels 60 thru 69, as well.

Although television broadcasters will not be fully up and running with their UHF hi-def transmitters for two to five years, they will begin transmitting test signals way before then.

Most new radio mics being sold are HDTV safe, either by side-stepping the affected frequency range or by straddling 2-3 consecutive TV channels with the assumption that the FCC will avoid adjacent channel placement.

For instance, Samson UHF is above the affected frequencies. Audio Technica's new UHF system covers TV 57, 58, and 59 since it is not likely for all three channels to be in use in the same city.
