Audiotape shortage in our industry... here we go again!
By this time, most folks in our industry are aware that 3M, Zonal, and BASF are
no longer manufacturing 1/4-inch audiotape.
At the end of February 2007, Quantegy announced that it would stop taking orders
for any more 1/4-inch stock.
But the good news is that we have located an alternative manufacturer, and they
are making quality 1/4-inch tape stock suitable for Nagra.
The new stock is biased for 468/480 type, similar to the BASF tape stocks that
some machines use. Nagras that have been set up for the conventional 406/408
tape stocks should be re-biased for the new stock.
The new tape is only available on seven-inch reels, so Nagra's lacking
the seven-inch lid covers are at a disadvantage. However, the five-inch lid
covers can be removed or left fully open, allowing all Nagra's to use the
seven-inch reels (at least in the studio or interior locations). As long as the
Nagra is kept horizontal, such as on a soundcart or table top -- there is no
problem whatsoever.
Equipment Emporium is currently out of stock of the Quantegy 406 five-inch audiotape.

Budgeting for Nagra audiotape
We're always asked, "How much tape do we need for our shoot?"
A standard magazine of 16mm film is 400 feet and runs approx 11 minutes. A
standard magazine of 35mm film is 1000 feet and runs approx 11 minutes.
So budget one 5 inch reel of tape (15 min @ 7 1/2 ips) per magazine. Or, two
film magazines per each 7 inch reel (30 min).
Yes, you might have some audiotape left over, but tape is cheaper than film &
processing so you never want to risk tape running out on the Nagra during a
take.
